Olu Jacobs Laid to Rest in Lagos

Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs has been laid to rest following a funeral service held in Lagos. The burial ceremony took place on Friday in the Lekki area of Lagos, with family members, friends, colleagues and dignitaries in attendance. Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, who was among the government officials present, described the late actor as an icon of the entertainment industry. Singer Dare Art Alade performed his song “Pray for Me” during the ceremony, while Nollywood stars including Kate Henshaw, Stan Nze and Ernest Obi also attended. Olu Jacobs, who died in September at the age of 84, was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before building a successful career in British television, theatre and Nollywood. He was also married to actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

Nigerian Amos Dangut Takes Over as WAEC Registrar

Nigeria’s Amos Dangut has officially assumed office as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC. Dangut took over on October first, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia. He will serve a five-year tenure, ending in September 2031. Before his new appointment, Dangut served as the Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria from October 2023. During his time in that role, he championed innovations including computer-based WASSCE, digital electronic marking and the digital certificate portal. Dangut has worked with WAEC for more than two decades, holding various positions in test development, examination security and administration.

NNPC Introduces ₦66 Fuel Discount Nationwide

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, has introduced a sixty-six-naira fuel discount for customers using the NNPC Fuel App at its stations nationwide. The promotion began on October first and will run until October seventh as part of activities marking the period. NNPC announced the offer on its social media platform, encouraging motorists and other customers to make purchases and carry out transactions through the Fuel App to enjoy the discount. The company said customers have already started taking advantage of the promotion, with activities recorded at several NNPC stations on the first day. NNPC urged customers to continue using the app throughout the promotional period and take advantage of the offer before it ends on October seventh.

Quadri Aruna Powers Amiens to Second Consecutive League Victory

Nigeria’s table tennis star Quadri Aruna has helped Amiens STT secure a second straight victory in the French Pro B League. Aruna delivered a strong performance as Amiens defeated Nantes TT 3-0 in their Week Two encounter on Tuesday. The Nigerian recovered from losing the opening game 11-7 to Andre Silva, winning the next three games 11-5, 11-8 and 11-3. South Korea’s Cho Seungmin then defeated Nigerian veteran Segun Toriola in straight games, before Joao Monteiro sealed the victory for Amiens. The result keeps Amiens among the leading teams in the league after two rounds, as they continue their push for promotion to the French Pro A division. Aruna and his teammates will face Compiégnois TT in their next match on October 23.

Three Vigilantes Reportedly Killed in Kebbi–Niger Border Attack

Three vigilantes from Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State are feared dead after suspected bandits allegedly attacked them along the Kebbi-Niger border. The victims, identified as Abubakar Mai Nera, Tanko Sarki and Amadu Saminaka, were reportedly returning from Agwara in Niger State when they were ambushed around Kasabo, Binuwa and Mago communities. Local sources alleged that the attackers killed the vigilantes and set their bodies ablaze, although the bodies have not yet been recovered. Search teams and residents are continuing efforts to locate the victims. The Kebbi State Police Command said it could not confirm the incident, noting that the alleged attack occurred in Niger State. The identities of the attackers and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths had not been independently verified as of press time.

Nigeria–Indonesia Annual Trade Crosses $3 Billion

Nigeria and Indonesia’s bilateral trade has consistently exceeded three billion dollars annually, according to Indonesia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto. Speaking at an event in Abuja, Suharto said the two countries have a combined market of more than 550 million people, creating opportunities for increased trade and investment. He said Nigeria supplies energy to Indonesia, while Indonesian products are widely used by Nigerian consumers and businesses. The Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry said it is interested in Indonesia’s experience in manufacturing, agriculture, digital technology, infrastructure and industrialisation. Both countries also identified agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, the digital economy and creative industries as areas with potential for increased investment and cooperation. Officials from both countries called for stronger private-sector partnerships, technology transfer and improved business links to deepen economic relations.

Heart Foundation Says Over 235,000 Nigerians Die From Cardiovascular Diseases Yearly

The Nigerian Heart Foundation says more than 235,000 Nigerians die from cardiovascular diseases every year. The Foundation gave the figure while marking the 2026 World Heart Day in Lagos, stressing that many heart conditions can develop silently from childhood into adulthood. Its Executive Director, Dr Kingsley Akinroye, urged Nigerians to undergo regular medical checks, particularly blood pressure checks, and adopt healthier lifestyles from an early age. He identified tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, harmful alcohol consumption and air pollution as major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The Foundation also advised families to reduce excessive salt consumption, encourage regular exercise and ensure children develop healthy eating habits. It called for increased government investment in heart disease prevention, affordable treatment and local production of cardiovascular medicines.

Nigeria Demands Investigation After Three Citizens Die in South Africa

The Federal Government has condemned the deaths of three Nigerians in separate incidents in South Africa between September 18 and 21. The victims were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said Igwemmadu died after allegedly jumping from a building while trying to escape police harassment in Bloemfontein. Olatunde was reportedly shot during an altercation at a nightclub in Pretoria, while Nnaemeka died following an alleged assault involving South African politician and content creator Xolani Khumalo and members of his team. Nigeria has called on South African authorities to conduct thorough and transparent investigations and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted. The government also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, vigilant and security-conscious, while maintaining contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions for assistance.

Tinubu Extends 2025 Capital Budget Implementation to December

-President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill extending the implementation of the capital component of Nigeria’s 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026. The Appropriation Amendment Bill was passed by the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 29, before the President assented to it. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the extension would give government ministries, departments and agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects. This is the fourth extension of the 2025 capital budget. It was initially scheduled to end in December 2025, but was later extended to March, June and September 2026. The latest extension comes despite President Tinubu’s earlier promise to end overlapping budget cycles and close outstanding capital liabilities by March 2026.

Three Nigerians Killed in Separate South African Incidents

The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg says three Nigerians were killed in separate incidents in South Africa between September 18 and 21. The victims were identified as Kenechukwu Igwemmadú, Olaniyi Olatunde and Christian Nnaemeka. The Consulate said Igwemmadú died after allegedly jumping from a building while trying to escape police harassment in Bloemfontein. Olatunde, a security guard, was reportedly shot during an argument with a customer at a nightclub in Pretoria and later died in hospital. The third victim, Nnaemeka, was allegedly assaulted and tortured by members of a content-creation team led by South African politician Xolani Khumalo in Ekurhuleni, before he collapsed and died. The Nigerian Consulate has called for thorough investigations into the deaths and urged South African authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
