Train Smashes Into Car at Lagos Railway Crossing, Driver Survives

A 55-year-old motorist has escaped unhurt after a train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Ikeja, Lagos. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says the train was travelling towards Agege when the collision occurred on Friday. The impact badly damaged the car, but no injuries or deaths were reported. LASTMA officials and security personnel rescued the driver and cleared the wreckage from the tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey. However, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis following the incident. The cause of the collision has not been established. LASTMA has urged motorists to obey railway safety rules and avoid crossing the tracks when a train is approaching or in motion. The crossing has witnessed previous fatal accidents, including the 2023 collision involving a Lagos State Government staff bus that killed six people.

Nigeria Records 263 Lassa Fever Deaths in 2026

Nigeria has recorded 263 deaths from Lassa fever and 1,115 confirmed cases between January and September 20, 2026, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency says the case fatality rate has risen to 23.6 per cent, compared with 18.5 per cent during the same period last year. A total of 8,218 suspected cases have been reported across the country, with confirmed infections recorded in 24 states and 119 local government areas. Ondo State has the highest number of confirmed cases at 393, followed by Bauchi with 260, Taraba with 133, Edo with 122 and Benue with 61. Together, the five states account for about 87 per cent of confirmed infections. The NCDC identifies late presentation at health facilities, high treatment costs and poor environmental sanitation as major challenges. It has urged states to strengthen public awareness and advised healthcare workers to ensure early detection, prompt treatment and strict infection-prevention measures.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have taken a step closer to qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after defeating Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of their second-round qualifier. Michelle Alozie opened the scoring in the 48th minute at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, before Uchenna Kanu doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 60th minute. The victory gives Nigeria a two-goal advantage ahead of the return leg. Amnesty challenges Plateau government over dropped child-abuse case

Amnesty International has criticised the Plateau State Government for discontinuing the prosecution of a man accused of sexually abusing a four-year-old girl, despite a court-issued warrant for his arrest after he repeatedly failed to appear for trial. The case was discontinued in May 2026 by the state Ministry of Justice under the constitutional powers of the Attorney-General. However, Amnesty International Nigeria’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, questioned the decision and urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to intervene and ensure the case is reinstated. The organisation said the accused had failed to attend court proceedings despite being served with court documents, while the prosecution had witnesses and evidence ready for trial. Amnesty also called on the state Attorney-General to publicly explain why the case was dropped. The organisation and a civil society campaign group have urged the government to restore the prosecution, stressing the need to protect children from sexual violence and ensure access to justice.

Customs intercepts three endangered pangolins in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted three live pangolins concealed in sacks at Abeokuta Waterside in Ogun State. The endangered animals were discovered by a patrol team acting on intelligence, while the suspected smugglers fled after sighting the officers. The Ogun I Command said the pangolins were confined in wire mesh cages and hidden inside sacks in what appeared to be an attempt to evade detection. The animals have since been handed over to Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation for rehabilitation and eventual release into a protected habitat. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Abdulhamid Ibrahim, warned wildlife traffickers that offenders risk fines of up to 12 million naira and prison terms of up to 10 years under the relevant conservation laws. MTN customers face network disruption across five locations

MTN Nigeria has confirmed a network outage affecting customers in Lagos, Oyo, Rivers and Delta states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory. The audit also uncovered 46.86 million naira in payments made without the required pre-payment audit, while another 9.38 million naira was spent without adequate supporting documents. In total, the questioned transactions amounted to 108.46 million naira. The Auditor-General recommended that the tribunal account for the funds before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committees, recover and return the amounts to the federal treasury where required, and face possible sanctions for irregularities. The report attributed the issues to weaknesses in the tribunal’s internal control system.

FG considers petrol price cap amid rising fuel costs

The Federal Government is proposing a petrol price cap of about one thousand, three hundred and fifty naira per litre to reduce the impact of rising fuel costs on Nigerians. The Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, says the proposal would require fuel importers and local refiners to absorb temporary price increases and recover their losses when costs come down. The move follows a surge in global oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, which has pushed petrol prices to record levels. Better Half, which premiered on October 5, follows a relationship influencer whose plans to prove her love formula works are disrupted by secrets surrounding her fiancé’s family. The Ten, created by actress and filmmaker Lota Chukwu, follows 10 kidnapping survivors who reunite for a vigil, only for one of them to be murdered. The psychological thriller premieres tonight, October 8, at 8:30pm. The indigenous-language titles include Sirrin Amarya, about a bride who disappears before her wedding, Afobaje, which explores betrayal and royal succession, and Onu Ahia Nwanyi, which centres on a young woman who enters a traditional bride contest. Africa Magic says the new productions are part of its effort to showcase Nigerian stories, languages, culture and local talent to audiences across the continent.
