Wike Explains Why He Won’t Serve as Tinubu’s Campaign DG

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, explained that he could not serve as Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 campaign because he was not a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Wike also said he did not want to risk losing Rivers State, as some previous campaign directors-general had lost their home states during presidential campaigns. He said his priority was to help deliver both the FCT and Rivers State for Tinubu rather than hold a campaign position. Wike added that his support for Tinubu was being coordinated through a cross-party “Rainbow Coalition” involving politicians working for the President’s re-election while remaining members of their respective parties.

Gombe varsity ASUU suspends planned strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Gombe State University chapter, suspended its planned total and indefinite strike action. The union reached the decision after a congress meeting on Friday, August 21, giving the Gombe State Government and university management until October 2026 to fulfil agreements reached with the union. The agreements included the implementation of a new salary scale for academic staff and payment of outstanding arrears owed to members. ASUU said the suspension was conditional and warned that the strike would resume if the agreements were not implemented by the deadline.

Plateau Attack Survivors: ‘Gunmen Killed People in Their Sleep’

At least 24 people were reportedly killed after gunmen attacked Bin-Per community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The attackers reportedly stormed the community around 11:30 p.m. on Monday and moved from house to house, attacking residents who were asleep. Several homes were burnt while farmlands and crops were destroyed, with the victims later given a mass burial. The Plateau State Government ordered intensified security in the area, while the Police Command vowed to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Saraki Supports Tinubu’s Second Term — Kwara Senator

Senator representing Kwara Central, Saliu Mustapha, has alleged that former Senate President Bukola Saraki was supporting President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, despite leading the PDP in Kwara State. Mustapha, who recently defected from the APC to the PDP, said Saraki was backing the “Rainbow Coalition” working to improve Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027. He explained that his defection was part of a wider move by political groups in Kwara to challenge what they described as the emerging political dynasty of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. 2027: APC Appoints Yari Campaign DG, Uzodimma Secretary

President Bola Tinubu has constituted the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 elections, with former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, appointed as Director-General and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as Secretary. President Tinubu charged members of the council to work towards securing victory for the APC in the January 2027 presidential election, urging them to make his administration’s achievements the centrepiece of the campaign.

The exchange later became personal, with Davido referencing the 2010 controversy over alleged nude photographs of Wande Coal. Wande Coal responded with an insult referencing an old viral video involving Davido. The controversy intensified after Davido reposted the alleged photographs, prompting some social media users to accuse him of revenge porn and call for accountability. A Nigerian legal expert, Oluwatodimu Ige, popularly known as Oga_thelawyer, said the repost could potentially have legal consequences under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act, particularly if it was intended to embarrass, harass, intimidate or cause distress. However, he cautioned that not every repost of an intimate photograph automatically amounted to revenge porn under Nigerian law, noting that prosecutors would still have to prove the elements of a specific offence. He also explained that the fact that an image had previously been available online did not automatically mean the person had consented to its subsequent redistribution, especially in a different context.

10 Kidnap Victims Rescued by Soldiers in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 10 abducted persons during separate operations across Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States. In Sokoto, troops responding to a terrorist ambush in Isa Local Government Area rescued five civilians and recovered two motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing terrorists. In Kebbi, three kidnapped victims were rescued in Danko Wasagu LGA following an intelligence report. Meanwhile, troops responding to terrorist activity in Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State, forced the attackers to flee and rescued two captives who had sustained gunshot wounds. The victims were evacuated for medical treatment, while efforts continued to track the fleeing terrorists.

Tinubu: Returning to Subsidy Shows ‘Serious Ignorance’

President Bola Tinubu has criticised calls for the return of Nigeria’s petrol subsidy, describing the proposal as a sign of poor understanding of governance and economic management. Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. He said one of his political opponents had recently advocated a return to the subsidy regime. The President defended his decision to remove the subsidy in May 2023, saying the policy had placed significant pressure on government finances. He said 27 state governments had struggled to pay workers’ salaries and pensions before his administration came into office. Tinubu also said the funds saved from the subsidy removal had helped strengthen the financial capacity of the Federal Government and states to meet responsibilities such as road construction, housing, healthcare and education. Meanwhile, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the removal of the petrol subsidy generated N15.8 trillion in savings for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025. He clarified that the amount was not kept as a separate fund labelled “subsidy savings,” but formed part of the resources available to the Federation following the government’s economic reforms.

Christian Killings: Moore Explains US Decision to Keep Nigeria on CPC List

A US Congressman, Riley Moore, has said the United States should not remove Nigeria from its Country of Particular Concern, CPC, designation, citing continued attacks against Christians in parts of the country. Moore said the Nigerian government must do more to protect Christian communities and hold those responsible for attacks accountable. His comments followed a recent attack in Plateau State, where more than 24 people were reportedly killed and several others remained missing. The US Bureau of African Affairs had also condemned the attack and urged the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of vulnerable communities. Meanwhile, the Christian Elders and Professionals Consultative Council of Nigeria supported the concerns raised by the US, while stressing that Christians, Muslims and traditional religious practitioners all deserved equal protection. The group called for thorough investigations and prosecution of those responsible for killings, kidnappings and displacement, while urging the government to improve intelligence gathering, early warning systems and security responses. Nigeria was first designated a CPC by the US in 2020, removed from the list in 2021, and later returned to the designation under the Trump administration. The status is reviewed annually, with the next review scheduled for November.
