Davido Jokes With Wike: ‘I Won, Beat You Guys’

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, was recently captured in a playful exchange with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The exchange took place on Thursday when Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke visited Wike in Abuja following his re-election in the August 15 governorship election. In a viral video, Davido repeatedly told Wike, “I won, I beat you guys,” while the minister smiled and disputed the claim. Wike responded, “No, no,” before asking, “You beat us?” Davido insisted that he had won. The light-hearted banter ended with the singer prostrating before Wike before hugging him, drawing laughter and applause from those present. The exchange was widely linked online to the recent Osun governorship election, in which Davido’s uncle, Ademola Adeleke, won re-election on the platform of the Accord Party. Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. Davido had actively campaigned for his uncle before the election and had criticised the Federal Government over concerns about the use of federal influence in the poll. However, Wike later said Adeleke won because President Bola Tinubu allowed the election to be free and fair.

60-Year-Old Dies After Clash Involving Davido’s Security Team in Osogbo

A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday following a confrontation between suspected hoodlums and the security team of music star, Davido. The incident reportedly occurred shortly after Davido accompanied his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo to present his certificate of return after winning the August 15 governorship election. According to the Osun State Police Command, trouble started when a suspected thug, identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of the singer’s security team. The confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members, who later obstructed movement around the palace. The police said the suspects eventually left the area but allegedly shot Yusuf while fleeing. Yusuf was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead. The police have launched an investigation and intensified efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects.

FAAC Allocations Alone Cannot Guarantee State Prosperity — Oyedele

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said federal allocations alone could not guarantee prosperity for states, urging them to develop sustainable sources of revenue and strengthen their productive capacity. Oyedele said Nigeria recorded about N15.8 trillion in savings from fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms between June 2023 and December 2025. However, he explained that the money was shared among the Federal, state and local governments and was not a huge pool of cash retained by the Federal Government. He said the reforms had increased monthly Federation Account allocations from between N300 billion and N600 billion before 2023 to more than N2 trillion. The minister urged states to diversify their economies, improve internally generated revenue and focus on production, investment and job creation rather than depending heavily on federal allocations. He also explained that the Federal Government continued to borrow because its revenues remained insufficient to meet its growing obligations, including wages, debt servicing, infrastructure and electricity subsidies.

Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has urged the club to beat Arsenal to the signing of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. Alderweireld said Tottenham needed a proven goalscorer after lacking goals last season, describing the Galatasaray forward as an ideal addition to manager Roberto De Zerbi’s attack. South African Consulate Rejects Claims of Visa Restrictions on Nigerians

The South African Consulate in Lagos has denied reports that it stopped issuing visas to Nigerians amid ongoing anti-migrant protests in South Africa. The Consul General, Professor Bobby Moroe, said visa applications were still being processed and that qualified Nigerian applicants would not be denied visas because of the protests. Moroe made the clarification during a round-table organised by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, adding that Nigerians continued to travel to South Africa for tourism and other legitimate purposes. He said visa applicants would only be denied if they failed to meet the requirements for the category of visa they applied for, stressing that Nigerians would not be discriminated against. The consul general also highlighted South Africa’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation system, which was designed to make travel authorisation faster and more convenient. He said the digital system had reduced documentation requirements and allowed prospective travellers to apply using their mobile devices.

Fubara Pushes for Vocational, Technical Education Reform

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for a stronger focus on vocational and technical education in Nigeria, saying the country’s emphasis on certificates and degrees without practical skills had contributed to unemployment and economic challenges. Fubara made the call on Wednesday while commissioning three projects at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic in Rumuola, Rivers State. He said the education system needed to equip young people with practical skills that could help them become self-employed and create jobs. The governor recalled that Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system was originally designed to expose students to vocational training and prepare them for either higher education or skilled employment. He, however, lamented that the country had gradually moved away from that vision. Fubara said polytechnics and entrepreneurship centres should be given greater importance because they could help students develop technical skills and become employers of labour rather than job seekers. He also said his administration was focused on projects that would directly improve people’s lives and address societal challenges, stressing that technological advancement had made practical and technical skills increasingly important. The governor urged students and residents to protect the newly completed facilities from vandalism and encouraged communities to take ownership of government projects.

Osogbo Tense as Hoodlums Attack Adeleke’s Convoy

Suspected hoodlums on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, shortly after he visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji. The incident reportedly lasted about 12 to 15 minutes, as the attackers exchanged gunfire with security personnel attached to the governor. The hoodlums were said to have arrived in an unregistered Sienna bus through the Ita Olokan area. Adeleke had visited the palace after receiving his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission following his re-election. The attack reportedly began as he and his entourage were preparing to leave the palace. Witnesses said the attackers fired at the palace gate, forcing traders and residents around the area to flee for safety. The assailants later escaped towards Ita Olokan along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road. The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the attack and said the governor’s security personnel successfully repelled the hoodlums. He initially stated that no casualty was recorded.

Tinubu Approves Recovered Funds, Unclaimed Dividends for Student Loan Scheme

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new funding arrangement for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, directing that liquid funds recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as well as certain unclaimed dividends, be channelled into the student loan scheme. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. He said the move was aimed at strengthening NELFUND’s finances as demand for student loans continued to increase. Alausa explained that only liquid EFCC-recovered funds that were free from legal disputes would be transferred to NELFUND. He clarified that the directive did not include forfeited properties or other assets recovered by the anti-graft agency. The minister also said FEC had approved the transfer of unclaimed dividends from the Capital Market Trust Fund and the Dormant Account Trust Fund to NELFUND. He said the decision was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to tertiary education and ensure that financial difficulties did not prevent qualified Nigerian students from pursuing higher education.

Plateau Attack: 24 Killed, Several Others Injured

At least 24 people were killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The attack occurred between Monday night and the early hours of Wednesday, with residents reporting that the assailants moved from house to house, attacking people who were asleep. Several homes were reportedly burnt, while farmlands and crops were also destroyed. The Mwaghavul Youth Movement confirmed the death toll and expressed concern over repeated attacks on vulnerable communities in the area. The group called for stronger security measures to protect residents. Women from the community also staged a peaceful protest, carrying leaves and demanding urgent government action following the killings. The 24 victims were later given a mass burial, while injured survivors were taken to hospitals for treatment. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, directed security agencies to intensify surveillance and patrols in Mangu and other vulnerable areas of the state. Security Forces Block Ex-Servicemen From Protesting at Defence Ministry

Armed police officers and soldiers on Wednesday prevented retired military personnel from protesting in front of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja over unpaid consequential pension adjustments. The ex-servicemen had gathered to demand the implementation of pension increases linked to salary adjustments approved for serving military personnel. Security personnel moved to stop the retirees from assembling at the ministry, leading to a confrontation between some serving soldiers and the protesters. More police officers and soldiers were later deployed to the area, effectively preventing the ex-servicemen from carrying out their planned demonstration at the ministry’s premises. The retirees had maintained that they were entitled to consequential adjustments to their pensions following salary increases granted to serving members of the armed forces.
