Tinubu Extends European Trip, Plans Weekend Return

President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days and is expected to return to Nigeria this weekend. The Presidency says Tinubu has remained in contact with developments in the country and continues to direct government affairs while away. It says the President recently ordered an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the NSCDC in Minna, Niger State. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been representing Tinubu at some official events but is currently in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The Presidency says Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, will continue to represent the President at other official engagements. Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned who is constitutionally exercising presidential powers while both Tinubu and Shettima are outside Nigeria. Atiku cited Section 145 of the Constitution, arguing that Nigerians should be shown the formal declaration transferring presidential authority to the Vice President as Acting President.

GehGeh reignites debate over Real Warri Pikin’s Timaya stage moment

Social media personality GehGeh has called out comedian Real Warri Pikin over her response to the backlash surrounding her recent appearance on stage with singer Timaya. The controversy started after a video from the 2026 AFRIMMA Awards in Dallas showed Real Warri Pikin joining Timaya during his performance of “Ukwu.” Timaya was later seen lifting the comedian on stage, sparking criticism online, particularly because she is married. Real Warri Pikin, whose real name is Anita Asuoha, later apologised to her husband and others who were offended, explaining that she did not know Timaya planned to lift her. However, she later defended her actions, saying she was an entertainer and had done it “with my full chest.” GehGeh criticised the comedian’s response, describing the incident as an attack on her husband’s ego and questioning why she returned to the issue after apologising. The controversy has since resurfaced online, with discussions now focusing on both the stage incident and Real Warri Pikin’s response to her critics.

NCAA orders Air Peace to compensate passengers after flight disruption

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has directed Air Peace to compensate passengers affected by a delayed Lagos-to-Enugu flight. The NCAA said its preliminary investigation found that the airline mistakenly sent passengers the wrong notification about the flight. The flight, originally scheduled for 6:45 a.m. on Monday, was later delayed until 4:50 p.m., leaving some passengers stranded at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The regulator said the disruption was linked to a ripple effect from flight problems experienced by the airline on Sunday night. NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu said Air Peace has been ordered to provide a compensation package and adequate care for the affected passengers. He also said the airline would face sanctions if it fails to comply with the directive. Meanwhile, Air Peace has disputed NCAA figures showing that 71.4 per cent of its flights were delayed in August, saying the data left out more than 700 flights. The airline also said only about 15 per cent of its delays were caused by internal factors.

Zamfara raises health workers’ salaries by 95 percent

The Zamfara State Government has approved a 95 per cent increase in the salaries of health workers across the state. The new salary structure took effect from September 7 and is aligned with the Federal Government’s approved health-sector salary structure, CONHESS. The state government says the adjustment is aimed at improving workers’ welfare, boosting morale and strengthening healthcare delivery. It has also directed health workers to respond to the increase with greater commitment, professionalism and dedication to their duties. Under the revised hazard allowance, clinical health workers on grades one to five will receive 15,200 naira, while non-clinical workers will receive 14,250 naira. For grades six to 12, clinical workers will receive 30,400 naira, while non-clinical workers will get 28,500 naira. Workers on grades 13 to 15 will receive 32,300 naira for clinical roles and 30,400 naira for non-clinical roles.

Naira stays around ₦1,330 as dollar trades higher on parallel market

The naira opened the new week at different rates against the US dollar across Nigeria’s official and parallel foreign exchange markets. Data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market put the naira at about one thousand, three hundred and thirty-one naira, twenty kobo to the dollar, based on Friday’s confirmed rate. In the parallel market, the dollar was quoted at around one thousand, three hundred and ninety-five naira on Monday. This puts the gap between the official and parallel-market rates at nearly sixty-four naira per dollar. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves have risen to 54.61 billion dollars as of September 14, according to Central Bank data cited by BusinessDay. The figure represents an 18-year high and a 30.52 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. Actual exchange rates may vary depending on the bank, Bureau de Change operator, transaction size and location.

Atiku questions Tinubu’s decision to skip UN General Assembly again

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is asking President Bola Tinubu to explain his absence from the United Nations General Assembly for the third consecutive year. Tinubu has sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, after also being absent in 2024 and 2025. Atiku questioned whether Tinubu’s past legal controversies in the United States had influenced his decision not to attend. However, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, says there is no cause for concern, noting that more than 60 per cent of countries listed to speak at the session are represented by vice presidents or foreign ministers. Ibrahim said Tinubu is currently in France on annual leave, while Shettima and the Foreign Affairs Minister are adequately positioned to represent Nigeria. The UN General Assembly’s high-level General Debate begins in New York as world leaders and senior officials gather to discuss global diplomatic, economic and security issues.

Trump returns to White House early amid Middle East tensions

US President Donald Trump has cut short his weekend stay at Camp David and returned to the White House earlier than planned as tensions rise in the Middle East. The White House did not give a specific reason for the change, although officials say weekend travel plans can be altered for various reasons, including weather conditions. The move came after the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said the Iran-backed group fired a ballistic missile towards Riyadh. The incident happened shortly after a fire was reported near the Saudi capital’s international airport. Rising medicine prices push more Nigerians towards herbal remedies

The death toll from suspected toxic herbal concoctions in Ondo State has risen to 49, with about 182 people affected across three local government areas. The state government says the outbreak has raised fresh concerns over the dangers of unregulated herbal drinks, as investigations continue into what caused the deaths. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has now confirmed high concentrations of methanol in some of the locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions linked to the incident. According to NAFDAC, five victims have been left completely blind, while two others suffered partial blindness. The agency says 90 affected persons have been treated and discharged, while six remain hospitalised. NAFDAC says 15 unlabelled samples were tested, with 11 also testing positive for Cannabis indica. It says confirmatory tests are still ongoing to determine the exact concentration of methanol and identify other possible toxic substances. The agency has warned Nigerians against consuming unlicensed or locally prepared herbal and alcoholic drinks with unknown contents, while 15 people have reportedly been arrested over the production, sale and distribution of the implicated beverages.
