Port Harcourt’s Bole Festival Celebrates 10 Years of Food and Music

Bole Festival in Port Harcourt has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a three-day programme combining food, music and culture. The 2026 edition, held from September 4 to 6, featured performances from artists including Johnny Drille, Magixx, Timaya, Duncan Mighty, Peruzzi, 1Da Banton, Mavo, Guchi and Carter Efe. The festival began in 2016 with about 300 people gathered around a bole seller and a fire. It has since grown into an annual event celebrating bole, a popular Rivers State dish of roasted plantain served with fish and sauce. The festival was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned the following year, attracting twice the audience recorded in 2019. Organisers say the 10th anniversary marks a new phase for the festival, with plans to attract visitors from across Nigeria and other parts of Africa while expanding its food, music and cultural experiences.

Rivers Hoopers Win Seventh Nigerian Basketball League Title

Rivers Hoopers have reclaimed the Nigeria Premier Basketball League title after an unbeaten run in the 2026 Final Four playoffs in Port Harcourt. The KingsMen secured the championship with a game to spare after defeating Gboko City Chiefs 88-76 on Monday, before beating Maktown Flyers 92-90 in overtime on Tuesday. The victory gave Rivers Hoopers their seventh NPBL title and also avenged their narrow 74-72 defeat to Maktown in last season’s championship final. The team’s triumph also earns them a place in the 2027 Basketball Africa League, marking their return to the continental competition after missing the previous season.

Police Report Rescues and Arrests Across 10 States

The Nigeria Police Force says it has recorded operational successes across 10 states, including the killing of a suspected bandit, the rescue of seven victims and the arrest of 17 suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping and murder. The operations took place between September 21 and 22, according to the police. In Benue State, officers responding to a bandit attack at Abeda Market in Logo Local Government Area killed one suspected bandit and arrested two others. In Katsina State, police also foiled an attack on a vehicle carrying six female students of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma along the Kankara-Dutsin-Ma Road. The students and their driver were rescued unharmed. Meanwhile, four suspected members of an outlawed terrorist group were arrested in Anambra State, while other suspects were picked up in connection with alleged kidnapping, murder, illegal firearm possession and defilement cases. The police say investigations are ongoing across the affected states.

Manufacturers Seek Tighter Rules for Foreigners in Nigeria’s Retail Market

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to regulate the involvement of foreign nationals in Nigeria’s retail trade. MAN’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, says foreigners should not be allowed to enter areas of business meant for local operators without proper regulatory oversight. The call comes amid concerns over the activities of Chinese traders in last-mile retail, with traders previously protesting their alleged involvement in retail operations at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex. Meanwhile, the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise has urged the government to review business permits and expatriate quotas for foreigners operating in the retail sector.

Makinde Denies N50bn Federal Funding Claim Over Ibadan Airport

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has denied claims that the Federal Government gave the state 50 billion naira to upgrade the Ibadan International Airport. The claim was made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike during a television programme earlier this week. Makinde says the airport upgrade is being funded entirely by the Oyo State Government. His media aide, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, also said a presidential approval for the project stated that it would be carried out at no cost to the Federal Government. The state says the ongoing work includes runway expansion, improved aviation lighting and navigation systems, apron upgrades and the construction of a new international terminal. Makinde has also called for mining responsibilities to be devolved to state governments, with the Federal Government retaining oversight.

Nigerian Doctors Perform West Africa’s First Remote Robotic Surgery

Nigeria has recorded what the Redeemer’s Health Village describes as West Africa’s first telerobotic surgery, with surgeons operating on a patient from about 500 kilometres away. The procedure was carried out at a hospital in Abuja by surgeons at the Redeemer’s Health Village in Mowe, Ogun State, using a robotic system connected through the internet. The surgery involved the removal of a cancerous kidney and was performed in collaboration with RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital. Doctors say the breakthrough could allow specialists in Nigeria and abroad to remotely perform complex surgeries on patients in locations where the required expertise is unavailable. The hospital also performed a robotic-assisted procedure on a 28-year-old patient to remove an obstruction and improve urine flow. The Chief Executive Officer of the Redeemer’s Health Village, Dr Adedamola Dada, is calling for government support to train more surgeons, nurses and biomedical engineers in robotic surgery. Doctors say the technology could help overcome geographical barriers and expand access to specialised healthcare across Nigeria.

Nigeria Returns to FTSE Frontier Market, Attracting Fresh Foreign Investment

Foreign and institutional investors are showing renewed interest in Nigerian equities following the country’s return to FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market indexes. The reclassification took effect on Monday, triggering increased trading activity, particularly in major banking stocks. Zenith Bank, GTCO and FirstHoldCo were among the companies that attracted strong initial demand as international investors began adjusting their portfolios. Nigeria was removed from FTSE Russell’s indexes in 2023 after challenges including foreign exchange shortages and difficulties repatriating investors’ funds. The country has since introduced reforms aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity, stabilising the naira and strengthening market infrastructure. FTSE Russell says Nigeria now meets all five of its quality-of-markets requirements for frontier market status. Lagos-Ibadan Longbridge Slips Back Into Darkness as Lights Are Stolen

Darkness has returned to the Longbridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as more solar-powered streetlights are reportedly removed by suspected vandals. A recent inspection found that only about 20 streetlights were still standing roughly three kilometres into the bridge, with a few others remaining at both ends. This comes weeks after about 168 solar-powered streetlights were reported missing from the approximately five-kilometre bridge. Residents say the continued vandalism is raising concerns about security, particularly at night when most sections of the bridge are now in darkness. The Longbridge has previously been linked to attacks on motorists, especially those whose vehicles break down on the highway after dark. The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Michael Komolafe, says police patrols may have been affected after a patrol vehicle was involved in an accident, leaving one officer hospitalised. He says there is currently no confirmed plan to replace the vandalised lights and stresses that any replacement must be accompanied by measures to prevent further vandalism.

Dangote Eyes Over $10bn Investment in Nigeria’s Power Sector

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, says his business group plans to invest more than 10 billion dollars in the power sector to tackle Africa’s electricity crisis. Dangote made the disclosure during an interview with Al Jazeera, saying unreliable electricity and inconsistent government policies remain major obstacles to investment across the continent. He says the group is considering moving funds from some businesses, including steel, into electricity generation and other power projects. Dangote says more than 600 million Africans still live without electricity and argues that reliable power is essential for industrialisation, job creation and economic growth. He also says Africa must reduce its dependence on imported goods by processing more of its raw materials locally and expanding local production. The businessman says his group will continue investing in Africa despite criticism and accusations that its activities create monopolies. Dangote maintains that the government has not granted his businesses exclusive rights, saying opportunities remain open to other investors willing to participate in Africa’s economy.
