UCH Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Management Dispute

Allied health professionals at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, have commenced an indefinite strike over a disciplinary case involving the hospital’s Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Adeyinka Ishola. The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals says the strike began on Wednesday, September 16, after several attempts to resolve the dispute through dialogue failed. The union is demanding the implementation of a Federal Ministry of Health recommendation that Ishola be reprimanded and reinstated. The dispute follows allegations that Ishola sold a tricycle donated to the hospital’s Pharmacy Department without management’s approval. According to the union, a ministry investigation found Ishola not guilty of fraud but responsible for failing to properly involve hospital management in the sale. The union says the proceeds of about 1.3 million naira were used for departmental needs and were fully accounted for. However, the hospital management reportedly maintains that the ministry’s decision is not final and has not reinstated Ishola. The union says the strike will continue indefinitely until its demands are met, raising concerns about possible disruption to healthcare services at the major tertiary hospital.

FRSC Warns Nigerians Over Fake Traffic Offence Messages

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has warned motorists and members of the public about fake text messages claiming that recipients have committed new road traffic offences. The messages, being circulated through mobile phones and social media, direct people to a fraudulent website designed to look like the official FRSC platform. The Corps says the website is fake and has no connection with the agency. FRSC advised motorists to verify any alleged traffic offence through its official channels instead of clicking links sent in unsolicited messages. The agency warned that the scam could be used to steal personal and financial information, including bank details, passwords, card information, driver’s licence and vehicle registration details. Members of the public who receive the messages have been advised not to click the links or communicate further with the senders, but to preserve the evidence and report the scam. The FRSC reminded motorists that its official toll-free number is 122 and urged Nigerians to stop, verify and report before responding to messages claiming to be from the agency.

Lagos-Ibadan Traffic Sends Transport Fares Up as Crash Claims Four

Motorists and commuters using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are facing severe traffic congestion, with transport fares rising sharply as repairs continue on the Kara Bridge. Some commuters reportedly paid up to N5,000 for trips that normally cost far less, while others were forced to trek long distances to escape the gridlock. The traffic stretched from Fatgbems through Long Bridge, Arepo, Mowe and other parts of the Lagos-Ibadan corridor, with some motorists stranded for more than 22 hours. The situation also contributed to a fatal crash near Ipara Remo in Ogun State, where four people were killed and another injured. The Federal Road Safety Corps said the crash happened around 4 a.m. when a Mitsubishi reportedly rammed into a moving truck while attempting to overtake at high speed. The FRSC attributed the crash to speeding, wrong overtaking and driver fatigue. Meanwhile, five vehicles were involved in another crash on Otedola Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday. LASEMA said all trapped victims were rescued alive and taken to the Trauma Centre for treatment, with no deaths recorded. Traffic recovery operations are ongoing as authorities work to remove the damaged vehicles, while movement remains slow along some sections of the expressway.

FG Pauses King’s College Concession Amid Protests

The Federal Government has suspended the planned takeover of King’s College, Lagos, by the school’s Old Boys’ Association for two weeks. The decision followed a meeting between the education ministers and representatives of education-sector labour unions in Abuja on Wednesday. The government also ordered the withdrawal of police officers deployed to the school, while the unions agreed to suspend their industrial action. A seven-member committee will now review and negotiate the government’s agreement with the King’s College Old Boys’ Association. The dispute began after workers protested the concession, arguing that it could amount to privatising the Federal Government-owned unity school. However, the government says King’s College has not been sold or privatised, stressing that ownership remains with the Federal Government. The Old Boys’ Association also maintains that it only intends to manage and improve the school, promising not to increase school fees or sack teachers. Education Minister Tunji Alausa says the arrangement applies only to King’s College and will not be extended to other Unity Colleges. He added that about 20 Unity Colleges are being considered for rehabilitation using approximately 20 million dollars redirected from a World Bank-supported programme.

Nigeria targets strong showing at World Chess Olympiad

Nigerian chess players are confident of making a strong showing at the 46th FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Nigeria is represented by 10 players, five men and five women, at the competition which runs from September 15 to 27. Nigeria’s number-one chess player, Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, says the team has a strong mix of experienced players and young talents and is targeting a category medal. One of the youngest members of the team is 15-year-old Ekunke Goodness, who is making his Olympiad debut after winning the World Rapid Amateur Chess Championship in Abuja last month. Goodness says he is not feeling pressured and is determined to perform at his best on the global stage. The women’s team also features teenage player Michelle Nwankwo, while Deborah Quickpen says her preparations have given her confidence ahead of the tournament. The Olympiad features a record 400 national teams competing in the Open and Women’s sections, with Team Nigeria beginning its campaign today.

Dangote explains why petrol prices remain high

Dangote says petrol prices in Nigeria remain high despite local refining because the Dangote Refinery still buys crude oil at prevailing international market prices. Speaking on Arise TV, the President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said the refinery paid as much as 124 dollars per barrel for crude in May, making it difficult to sell petrol at significantly lower prices. He also said petrol prices in neighbouring countries are between 30 and 50 percent higher than in Nigeria, which has contributed to the continued smuggling of locally produced petrol across the borders. Dangote assured Nigerians that there would be no fuel shortage or queues, saying the refinery would continue supplying the market despite the challenges. He also identified high interest rates, inconsistent government policies and inadequate electricity as major obstacles to industrialisation in Nigeria. On succession, Dangote said having a male heir was not a priority for him, adding that any of his three daughters could eventually lead the Dangote Group. He said he wants the company to be professionally managed with strong corporate governance, regardless of whether a family member eventually takes control. Dangote said his ultimate legacy is to contribute to the industrialisation of Africa and encourage more large-scale investments across the continent.

FG expands AI and robotics training to 15 more institutions

The Federal Government is expanding its training programmes in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics and other emerging technologies to 15 more tertiary institutions across the country. The expansion was announced during the commissioning of a TETFund and Renewed Hope Initiative ICT Experience Centre at Kwara State University. The new centres are being constructed in institutions across Adamawa, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Katsina, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Rivers, Yobe and Zamfara states. The programme, championed by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu through the Renewed Hope Initiative in partnership with TETFund, is designed to give young Nigerians access to digital learning, creativity, research and technological innovation. The centres will feature ICT laboratories, interactive digital displays, conference facilities and exhibition spaces. TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono says the initiative will expose students to emerging technologies while helping to bridge Nigeria’s digital skills gap and improve graduate employability.

Several Nigerian footballers are enjoying a return to form with their European clubs after difficult spells at previous teams. Customs commits ₦70bn to schools and other projects

The Nigeria Customs Service says it has committed about ₦70 billion to Corporate Social Responsibility projects across the country. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after commissioning renovated facilities at Ife Girls’ High School in Ile-Ife, Osun State. He said education and critical infrastructure are among the major areas being targeted, as the government cannot address the country’s infrastructure needs alone. At Ife Girls’ High School, Customs renovated four classroom blocks, a laboratory, a staff building and the principal’s lodge. Adeniyi said the intervention was aimed at improving the learning environment and giving greater attention to girl-child education. He added that the Service has identified other schools across the country for similar interventions.

NDLEA uncovers major meth lab, arrests Mexican suspect

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested a suspected Mexican drug kingpin and dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State. The suspect, identified as Mexican national Arturo Carrera Loaiza, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while allegedly trying to leave Nigeria. The NDLEA said Loaiza was linked to a transnational drug syndicate behind several clandestine methamphetamine laboratories uncovered in different parts of the country. According to the agency, investigations revealed that Loaiza allegedly recruited another Mexican national, Jose Villa Ochoa, who was earlier arrested at a meth laboratory in Oyo State. Investigators later traced Loaiza to a property under construction in Isiata Ugoni Okposi, Ebonyi State, after analysing metadata from photographs recovered during the investigation. A raid on the property on August 30 uncovered structures, chemicals and equipment allegedly connected to methamphetamine production. CCTV footage reportedly showed Loaiza and a Nigerian suspect, John Samuel Ivo Okike, moving chemicals and laboratory equipment. The NDLEA said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members, financiers and collaborators allegedly connected to the drug network.
