President Bola Tinubu has set October 1 as the target date for nationwide measures aimed at reducing transport fares through the wider use of compressed natural gas, known as CNG, and electric-powered vehicles.
The President is urging the 36 state governments to speed up their CNG and alternative-energy transport programmes, saying savings from cheaper energy should translate into lower fares for commuters.
Tinubu says the October 1 target follows his August 27 meeting with the governors, after which an implementation committee was established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
He cited examples from several states where CNG and electric transport have already reduced fares, including Oyo, where the Lagos-Ibadan fare reportedly dropped from about eight thousand naira to three thousand two hundred naira.
The President says more than 120-thousand vehicles have now been converted to CNG, with over 400 certified conversion centres and more than 90 CNG refuelling stations across the country.
