Professor Lai Olorode, chairman of the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, has said the late former Lagos State governor foresaw the challenges many Nigerians now face abroad and believed the solution lay in building a better Nigeria.
Speaking at the annual lecture in Lagos on Thursday, Olorode recalled a personal conversation with Jakande, saying the former governor deliberately chose not to travel abroad during his time in office because he was committed to improving Nigeria.
According to him, Jakande once explained that rather than seeking opportunities or medical treatment outside the country, his focus was on developing Lagos into a place where people from other nations would come for opportunities and services.
Olorode said Jakande’s philosophy reflected a deep sense of patriotism and selfless public service, adding that his legacy remains relevant as many Nigerians continue to face discrimination and xenophobic attacks in countries such as South Africa.
He described Jakande as a leader who dedicated himself to serving the people with integrity, noting that his commitment to governance extended beyond politics to nation-building.
The professor also paid tribute to Jakande’s widow, Alhaja Jakande, praising her for maintaining a clear distinction between public office and family life during her husband’s administration.
According to Olorode, she never interfered in government affairs because she believed only her husband had been elected to govern, a stance he said contributed to the former governor’s enduring legacy.
The remarks were delivered during the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, themed “The Media, INEC, Voters and the Path to Credible Elections.” The event brought together journalists, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to discuss strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Olorode urged Nigerians to reflect on the kind of contribution they want to make to the country’s development, stressing that lasting national progress depends on responsible leadership, active citizenship, and strong institutions.
The Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture is held annually to celebrate the life and ideals of the late journalist and former Lagos governor while promoting conversations on governance, media responsibility, and civic engagement.
